SUMMARY:Partners carry out successful workshop for homeowners on making sustainable backyard choices!
DESCRIPTION:The Lehigh County Conservation District\, in partnership with Lehigh County Authority and Penn State Extension\, carried out a free workshop for homeowners October 20\, 2022 on STORMWATER SOLUTIONS. \n35 residents learned how their actions impact local water resources and how they can incorporate sustainable backyard solutions to improve the water quality of our watershed. \nParticipants received two native tree seedlings. \n \nParticipants learn about rain barrels\, rain gardens\, pervious pavers\, and converting lawns to meadow. \nIf you are interested in learning how YOU can be a part of the stormwater runoff and non-point source pollution solution\, reach out our Environmental Educator\, Laura Hopek\, at LHopek@LehighConservation.org for upcoming workshops. \nFinancial and other support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts\, Inc. through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act\, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. \n

SUMMARY:Riparian Buffer successfully planted in the Little Lehigh Creek Watershed!
DESCRIPTION:Conservation District staff and community residents planted a riparian buffer at East Buffer Street in Emmaus in September. Staff and volunteers dug holes and planted native trees and shrubs along a tributary to the Little Lehigh Creek. Thank you for helping us improve the water quality of the Little Lehigh Creek Watershed and providing a wonderful habitat for local wildlife. \n \nTree tubes are a barrier method of tree protection that prevents animal browse or harsh\, dry wind from damaging a tree seedling.

DESCRIPTION:2022-PACD-Poster-Contest-Flyer \nThe National Association of Conservation District’s announced their 2022 Poster Contest open to all public\, private\, and home school students in grades K-12. The 2022 theme is Healthy Soil: Healthy Life. Time spent in nature can benefit mental\, physical\, and emotional health. \nThe Lehigh County Conservation District’s mission is to provide environmental programs that train current and future generations of citizens and conservation leaders in our community. Art teachers in Lehigh County are currently being notified about the 2022 Poster Contest. Students will need to display how healthy soils mean healthy life through visual representations. \nWinning entries at the local level will be selected by the Lehigh County Conservation District staff and Board. Prizes will be awarded for 1st place in each age group (K-1st\, 2nd– 3rd\, 4th-6th\, 7th-9th\, and 10th-12th) and those winners will advance to the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts State level for judging. \nWinners from the State Level will then proceed to National competition\, which is sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts. \nIf your student is interested in participating in the 2022 event\, please e-mail our Environmental Educator\, Laura Hopek\, at LHopek@LehighConservation.org
